Katherine Maher retweets the claim that the first Ph.D. in Computer Science was Sister Mary Keller, working at MIT in the 1960s. Perhaps she should have read her own encyclopaedia, which gives that honour to David Wheeler, at the University of Cambridge Mathematical Laboratory, in 1951, for a thesis on Automatic Computing With EDSAC. The article linked in the tweet, by the way, makes the more rstricted claim that she was "the first American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science". Perhaps Katherine thinks that foreigners don't count.
