Sunlight Foundation

The Sunlight Foundation is a US "national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that uses civic technologies, open data, policy analysis and journalism to make our government and politics more accountable and transparent to all". Its governance looks interesting:

Board:
  • Mike Klein, Chairman, Co-Founder Sunlight Foundation
  • Craig Newmark, Customer Service Rep and Founder of craigslist.org and craigconnects
  • Katherine Maher, Executive Director of Wikimedia
  • Zoe Reiter, Acting Representative to the United States of America for Transparency International
  • John Wonderlich, Executive Director, Sunlight Foundation
Advisory Board:
  • Yochai Benkler, Berkman Professor of Entrepreneurial Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, co-director of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society
  • Mitch Kapor, Kapor Capital and Kapor Center for Social Impact
  • Lawrence Lessig, Harvard Law School, founder of Creative Commons, adviser to Wikitribune
  • Charles Lewis, Founder, Center for Public Integrity, Fund for Investigative Journalism
  • Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia, Wikitribune
It all sounds a little inward-looking to me. Any further info about the links between these people? Some other site had a thread about this entity a few years ago, but it was mainly interested in whether they had written their own Wikipedia entry.

However, something is clearly up at the Sunlight Foundation. Katherine Maher announces that she is "conducting a review into Sunlight’s culture and the harassment or exclusion it may have engendered" and suggests that this is different from the Sunlight Foundation also announcing its "Board's review of the organization's history". IT seems that something has happened, the Board is trying to smooth it over and Katherine isn't happy. Any idea what? Could it be allegations against former director Clay Johnson? Is there more to it than that? I Think We Should Be Told.
