I have not heard of The People's Operator in a long time. It's not doing well at all.
 Nice summary. 300 pages later Wikipediocracy has reached the same conclusion.
It was of course a clever-insane Jimmy plan after all. People in Europe take a provider what gives the best offer, A "free" IPhone, extra data, 200 SMS's free, etc. Just like the fiasco was build in in his Wikitribune. But I don't think Jimmy cares. He has his income, respect, is the founder of WP, and it's fine for him. Going back to WMF or the states should be the most stupide thing Jimmy can do. If the whole circus collaps, he can always say, I was not there, I was in England. They ruined my idea, there in SanFan.

Don't make the mistake to think Jimmy is stupide! Jimmy is a cork, he always keep on floating. The whole damed wiki world can burn down, but jimmy shakes himself like a duck in the rain, and is dry! Just like a Charlie Chaplin always was standing in the doorway as a facade came down. Mark my words!

James Titcomb wrote: Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales quits mobile network The People's Operator

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has left the struggling mobile network he helped take public as it fights to resolve a funding crisis by securing new cash. The People’s Operator, which floated at a £100m valuation in 2014, said Mr Wales had stepped down from the board “to concentrate on his other interests”.

May I be amused to have read it here first? :)

ps: thanks for the thread on the Sunlight Foundation. That's a very curious story.

haha awesome you read it here first! Shouldn't be so surprised as we are the true successor site of the great Wikipedia Review. Pretty soon all that weird Wikipediocracy nastiness will be forgotten.

So did I.
And I think Wikitribune will follow soon. Ah, Jimboo simply wasn't so clever as Durk Jan de Bruin, who sold his shitty "volunteers" knowledge" project Startpagina for in the in that time astronomic amount of money of 30 million guilder.

Durk went to South Africa, is leaving his live in a fantastic way there far away from the furieus "volunteers", and now almost everybody is forgotten what happened.
That is doing internet business. Tell your volunteers you will never, never sell the project, let them make your project to there profession, and sell the whole god dammed shit, and give them 1000 guilder each. And take the money and run literally.
What Jimmy is doing is said, real said.

Maybe he had to read first Durk's book "Van zolderkamer tot miljoenenbusiness." In other words, how do I make millions without investing anything. Durk always was very good in that kind of things, much better than Jimmy is.

(1 euro = 2,2 guilder)

Jimbo is not known for his business acumen. His mistake was to make Wikipedia a charity to offset costs from Bomis without considering that Bomis was going to die and Wikipedia was going to be the #5 site on the internet.

It's very hard to say what had happend if Jimmy hadn't made Wikipedia charity. Because what both made Startpagina and Wikipedia attractive and to a succes was the opportunity to make your work as a "volunteer' attractive, in many ways. Also financial.
But the true is different. Silicon Vally didn't know the world so well, and was thinking it was possible to let voluntaries collect "knowledge' and liberate it form copyright with that CC licence. And that was a misinterpretation, because the EU, the European Parlement has a complete different vision and in the long run is filtering all this collected knowledge out. That is only a matter of time.

So, wikipedia was a miscalculation. And if they had understood from the first moment the world is bigger than the state of California they had never, never promoted Wikipedia in this way and had Wikipedia died long, long ago.

Could be. Could be a simple screw-up. He miscalculated the potential of Wikipedia and made it a charity. Kind of a dumb move for an Ayn Rand fan to make.

Now years later he's still overcompensating by adopting this nonprofit, internationalist mindset as shown by his silly phone company and his news organization. It would destroy his ego to admit he made a $100 million mistake, so he just won't do it.

Plus he makes around $100,000 a year from a variety of business ventures, conference speaking and sponsorship roles based on his image. He can't afford to go completely broke by admitting that the shebang was probably just a link farm for his now defunct pornograhy search engine.

Yeh, that is weird. Jimmy just blew 100 million in the air with his indeed silly telephone company, but still everybody sees him as the godfather of the charity and free source mouvement. And, believe me, the complet wiki movement is exactly just as silly with it's bulllshit CC license what keeps them floating. Because that licence is based on nothing, it a fantasy licence and can never, never replace real copyright.
