Facebook has Wikipedia page on Breitbart come up on links to the site

Post by The Devil's Advocate » Thu Apr 05, 2018 12:50 am

The article goes into various details and references several of my Breitbart and Medium pieces, as well as one of the pieces about my Wikipedia ban.

Meanwhile over on WPO, Brandy from Boise is explaining to everyone why Wikipedia must have as many articles as possible on media outlets, websites, blogs so that whenever Google and Facetube link to them, Wikipedians can tell the world whether or not to believe them. It doesn't matter if there are no reliable sources discussing these outlets, the personal opinions of the Wikipedians are good enough.

They're dumb on WPO, but I think I'm with Brandy on this one. It looks like he's saying Wikipedia should have articles about marginally notable news sites so that readers can find out what the deal is if they see a questionable article originating from one of them.

Why not? Create the articles, let them be fought over and filled with crap. At least then there is a resource, rather than a blank spot on the web.

I would say the problem is the high risk of dishonesty and spin. Breitbart is a major news outlet and editors can't help but fill the article with slanted and dubious claims. What would keep them going further with less notable sources?

Mister Allum Bokhari is complete right, and I don't care if it the article was written on toilet roll, on a beer mat, in The New York Times or on Breitbart. When someone is right, he is right because every word he writes here is true.

"Wikipedia is notorious for its bias, editorial unaccountability, and unreliable articles. The online encyclopedia publicly claims that “anyone” can edit it, yet in reality, it is controlled by a small cabal of anonymous, unaccountable, politically partisan editors who have purged rival editors who do not align with their ideology."

It's complete undemocratic what they are doing. In Holland there philosophy is close related to De Piratenpartij, and extreem feminism.
Both ideas are NOT supported by the Dutch population, but Wikipedia-NL push this ideas indeed with small cabal of not always anonymous, unaccountable, most times politically partisan trolls.
These are no editors, this are internet trolls. I have given enough evidence of that on this site. And everyone how criticizes them is or will be blocked or (SanFan)banned.

right but everyone should know Wikipedia is crap. So where's the harm in letting them write garbage on the internet? The internet is also full of blogs and Facebook posts and all sorts of other unmoderated, poorly thought-out ranting. Allowing it on Wikipedia would not make things any worse.

Besides, if Wikipedia allows these articles and they fill with all sorts of inaccuracies about minor news sites, maybe the people who run those news sites will learn that Wikipedia is not reliable. Wouldn't that be a good thing?

That is where it's all about and where we agree, Auggie. It's a goofy project, every news media shout know that, and every educational institute too. And of course it would be a good thing if people knew what Wikipedia is. Indeed, crap.

The WMF has a nine-figure budget uwhich they use to promote the entrely false notion that Wikipedia is somehow reliable -- thanks to magic crowd-sourcing. That means that there will unfortunately be millions of people who believe their lies and assum that when Facetube links to a Wikipedia article about a source, that the assessment there represents the truth, rather than the random opinion of a random ignoramus,

You are right Renée. It's a circle. Like you said, millions of people who believe their lies and assum are keeping on to give them money, and WMF use that money to promote the entrely false notion that Wikipedia is somehow reliable. But it is a dangeres circle because it's a fire pyre construction and we should be very, very happy we are not a part of it.

But the real danger is it's a Hotel California construction because nobody can stop the train. Nobody can leave, because they are caught in a spider web of there lies, recorded in the wiki history. It must crash, and if it crash it crash in a chaotic way. Because it is one of the biggest sites in the world and it is close related to Google. And I think that is the reason they still can go on in the way they do, but there is a end.

It isn't just random people who believe them. Obviously the Big Tech giants think or at least treat Wikipedia as if it is trustworthy. The media also regularly consult Wikipedia as if it were a reliable source. Even your suggestion is probably not going to amount to much as Wikipedia has had more than enough chances to discredit itself, but it just never takes.
